Chapter Fourteen

September 19th, Evening

“By god, Lux,” Dustin drawled when he stepped up to her bedside, holding his Stetson in his hands. “I’ve seen bull riders stomped into the ground by a bull that looked better’n you do.”

“Your charm is comforting,” she replied dryly.

“I used ta think you was kinda pretty, but you’re lookin’ pretty damn used up.” The kindness in his eyes told her a different story than the words that were coming out of his mouth. He was genuinely concerned about her, but his way of expressing his feelings was to make light of the situation.

It worked magic on her, making her want to laugh, which hurt her broken ribs. “Don’t make me laugh, Cowboy. It hurts my ribs.”

His tone changed and his eyes took on an intensity that was beyond anything she’d ever seen before. “You just rest easy and get better, boss. We’ll track down Chelsea, Francois, an’ Ben, an’ we’ll get our ounce o’ flesh outta whatever or whoever did this to you.”

“Thank you, Cowboy.”

“Babe,” Ash said, taking hold of his elbow. “Let me introduce you to Rowan.”

Dustin turned around. “Pleased to meet you, ma’am. Lux tells me you sure as hell know how to sling hash.”

“Pleased to meet you too,” Rowan responded, suppressing a giggle and extending her hand toward him. She could sense a strength in him that caused her to understand why the others spoke so highly of him, yet he was so simple and personable.

“You must be Cowboy?” Lux’s nurse said, as she entered the room. “Your reputation proceeds you.”

“By god, ma’am that’s terrifying to hear,” he responded.

“Dustin McCord,” he said, introducing himself, and extended his hand to her. “You the vet that’s patchin’ up this sick critter?”

“I’m her nurse,” she giggled. “My name is Bethany.”

“You look like you’re doin’ a fine job, Beth. If you need me to flank her and keep my knee on her neck while you give her a pill, you jus’ let me know.”

Bethany and Rowan were a little overwhelmed by his way of speaking and his personality. All they could manage were giggles.

He turned serious again. “Y’all go on ‘bout your business. I’m gonna sit here beside Lux and get her story so we can go find our friends.”

“Where do you want me to start?” Lux asked.

“Start where you want, but make sure you’re pretty clear about when, where and how the other three disappeared an’ you ended up here.”

“Well, I guess I should explain who or what it is we’re hunting,” she said. Lux started with their interview of Taloulah, explaining how she believed the mambo was a rougarou that cast a spell on Mathéo.

“Hmmm,” he said, rubbing his chin. “That sounds like one o’ them shape-shifters Jackson told me about.”

“Chelsea said something about the rougarou being like a shape-shifter among the Southwest natives.”

“Alright, go on. You got somebody to take you into the swamp, then?”

She told him about Etienne, how he knew the swamp like the back of his hand, and knew Mathéo too. Thanks to him, they were able to find his trails and his camp.
